Evo2K11 Tekken 6 Results and Vids

I have to say that this was easily the most boring Tekken 6 top 8 I have ever seen. It's very unfortunate that it panned out the way it did because people were saying T6 is just like T4 with Jin. In top 8, we had 4 Bobs and 2 Laws. The only other characters used were Bryan and Kazuya and both Naps and Hart lost fairly fast. Not a good sign for the Tekken 6 scene if you ask me.

RESULTS
1. Kor (Bob)
2. NYC Fab (Bob/Miguel)
3. Rip (Law)
4. JustFrameJames (Law)
5. Crow (Bob)
5. Mr. Naps (Bryan)
7. Tokido (Bob)
7. Ryan Hart (Kazuya)

For those of you asking why I wasn't on commentary for Tekken 6 at Evo. I was scheduled to do commentary up untill Saturday when filthierich decided he wanted to do it with MarkMan instead of me. It worked out nicely though because T6 top 8 was boring as fuck.

Yeah that was a total bore. Especially bad since people who didn't know Tekken were watching it, and they'll probably write it off as a shit game. But the Tag 2 exhibition made up for it, that game looks great.

SIGH...boring

WTF Tokido @ top 8? he is not even a top tekken player in Japan.

I miss TOP Japanese and Korean Tekken players...

Real annoyed with seeing Bob's all day. Oh well congrats to the winners. Fab should of stuck with his Miguel. I really enjoyed MK tho. Great turnout! Lot's of Hype! The Reo/ Chris g match was amazing!!

At least MK was hype.

Glad to hear you thought it was boring as well. For a moment I thought I'd just lost all interest in Tekken.

Does anyone know why none of the big names from Japan come to EVO?

I've seen many Korean players in US Major, but not much from Japan.

I'm not clear on something. Boring due to character variety, or boring due to how the competitors were playing? I think the matches were great to watch, and the players were using the characters who would dominate with as little risk as possible. That's what they do.

As for bad signs for the Tekken scene, what about the lukewarm response during the Tag 2 exhibition (or maybe it was the SC5 presentation)?

why all American play Bob and Law.. I'll stuck watching Tekken Crash where I see players using Zafina and Yoshi in big tournaments

I have faith in the Tekken team and I believe that TTT2 will save Tekken in America. It's unfortunate that Tekken 6 floundered so badly after the console release, I really think it's a great game that deserves better. Here's to an Evo 2012 (maybe 2013) Tekken tournament with a large, diverse pool of talent.

I can't help but wholeheartedly agree Aris, this top 8 made tekken 6 look really bad and it got a lot of hate in the stream. Was really good to see Ryan heart rocking Kazuya tho, and he even landed a couple of clean abolishing fist EWGF launchers. but wasn't enough to beat the cheese of bob wish he made it further would have been alot more interesting..

I really hope they nerf the living fuck out of that lame fatass character (and law for that matter). namco here is a tip, if you make a character easy mode to play, don't give them really good ab-usable moves....

No respect for the top 8 this year. (except hart and naps). The lack of Japanese and Korean talent was really telling here...

It was boring because America is full of tier whores.

@Seeso 2D

Unconkable was using Zafina.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Top 8 has 4 Bob's and 2 Laws... yup, great variety right there.. 40 characters in the game.. Americans are such boring and predictable players!!! Always only playing 'by the book' and by frames, only using a few safe-ish moves!

Just look at Japan and Korea, heck, even Scandinavia -they have Kings, Baeks, Rogers, Zafinas, Bears and Jacks at top ranks in every major tournaments. Much more diversity! And they use the whole moveslist so it is more fun to watch.

This years evo was a major let-down for Tekken. I bet next year this game will be gone!

Between this finals, the already considerable amount of dislike/hate/apathy towards Tekken amongst stream watchers, the lukewarm response to the tag2 exhibition and even the fact that a VF veteran won SF4 in what is considered a moral victory for Virtua Fighter (check virtuafighter.com for the article, though I will say that the tone of the article is not really inflammatory), I predict Tekken to be obsolete/phased out of major tournaments permanently starting next year. I would think the case will not change even after Tag2 gets released in the US.

The game just does not catch a break and I feel that it's been on a downward spiral for a while. The community has stagnated, with no new players getting into the game. It's been removed from MLG due to low turnout/interest. 99% of stream viewers in major tournaments absolutely hate it. People unfamiliar with it think it's boring. People familiar with it think other 3d games like Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter are the superior 3d fighters and should replace it in streams (which is strange because I could argue those two games look just as boring to people unfamiliar to 3d games). Almost everyone who does not play it thinks it's only about juggles. Veteran players have either left for other games or just stopped playing; and most of them think the game has become shitty.

While I'm on a rant here, I guess I'll just go all the way, so I will just apologize in advance. In relation to the greater fighting game community and streams, Tekken has become that "special" kid your relatives let loose on a party to go dance/perform in front of his cousins. Everybody may clap afterwards, but nobody really looks forward to it. Level-headed people look on with apathy, some would let go a sigh of relief afterwards, some would laugh at him and try not to be too obvious about it and most of the others are just itching for it to be over.

With all the reactions given every time I see Tekken talked about in forums or in stream chat, you'd think this was Tekken 4 all over again. No other current fighting game gets this much hate and apathy combined. Not even MK or Arcana Heart. I'm starting to think it would have been better to go the way of VF or SC or even BlazBlue: not quite big, not quite noticed, but not quite shat on, either. It pains me to see things like this happen because I like the game and enjoy it despite its flaws. I got into the competitive side of fighting games because of Tekken Tag a little more than ten years ago .

A small positive for me during EVO: seeing Ryan Hart in the top 8 and even getting info that UNCONKABLE joined the tournament. They probably hate the game, but it was nice to see them give a damn (no matter how small) even for just this one tournament.

I'm sorry for the rant, and I'm probably overreacting, but I just have to vent this out (I will admit I can't really type something like this on TZ).

I hope you're still working on that Tekken Tag 2 comiccon writeup Aris. And I appreciate your efforts made towards this game/the community.

Most of those Bob players was Bob players since release! Have yall have been keeping up with the Tekken scene? KOR always played Bob. So did FAB. its just the usual suspects.yes variety could be better. but Tekken needs more players for that. I wish the best for this game. I know TTT2 will be hype and bring it back. i hope

Kor sucks

Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 9:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterroldie

Do you guys realize that 6 of the top 8 were the exact same players as last year? The big difference was that Nin with Steve wrecked everyone and Kor and Crow swapped to Lars for some matches instead of sticking with Bob the whole way through Top 8. We got one extra Bob player this year in Fab and one Kazuya compared to last year a Steve and a Julia who won matches. This year, the 'extra' characters lost fast and I agree, made the top 8 boring/repetitive.

Also interesting is the 'what if' scenarios if the guys who got 9th had made it in instead.
Gen1us - Paul
wcGalo - Julia
atlRedd - Law
k30 - King

Minus Redd, that wouldve been funner for everyone to watch Im sure, they just didn't win that last match.
And yea, sucks Aris wasnt on commentary.

I was strongly disappointed with the Tekken finals, as a new player thinking about possibly getting a new tekken game. Now clearly, it's illogical for me to base my decision on that single showing, so I won't. But as i've looked into tekken overall, i've become incredibly confused. There are like two tekken tag games coming out soon at some point. Will these even have a following or be popular? Clearly Street Fighter x Tekken overshadows all. Confusion is my current state of mind.
