Mortal Kombat Demo: Review Of System Mechanics
BY Aris ON Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 5:49PM
A more informed explanation of the Mortal Kombat system based on what I've learned from the demo so far.

meters for getting your ass beat is retarded like how SF4 is retarded.
i guess mk is going to be the most popular game ever then.
Hey methos57 quit trolling here and go back to the mkonline forums. can a valid and worthy player in the mk community please step up. This game is no where near as deep as Tekken nor can it compete on a competetive level. Think before you speak metho. Also stop disrespecting Aris. Everything he said was true in reguards to this so called demo. Its a work in progress and not the final build.
Also MK VS.DC Universe was probably the worst fighter I ever played. MK is not even in arcades anymore. It became a console fighter. MK hasn't been good since MK2 and Ultimate MK3 which was superbly broken and still is.....so give up menthos57.
In what world is stating facts trolling, the fact is that Aris doesn't know enough about MK at all to comment on it and he is stating widely inaccurate info. No where have I stated that past MK games have been as deep as Tekken now have I, but at the same time as an MK fan I think it only fair to point out Aris's inaccuracies, would you not do the same if someone misrepresented Tekken or SF. Fact is that Aris has stated some extreme dumb shit in his vid by stating that MK is trying to change up 2D fighters which is nonsense since MK has always been the same. Also his comment on how he thinks the breakers useless while talking about 60% damage combos is just a head scratcher at best, how can they be useless if such damaging combos are out there. Those combos don't make the game unbalanced, because the whole purpose of the breakers is too level the field and too be able to break such combos. The same with the Meter, it works like any other 2D game in that those getting hit get priority in their meter being filled, as an way to level the field giving them a chance to use ultras and supers to give them more of an chance. This is done to balance the games.
Not liking MK isn't what is pissing me off, I'll be the first to state that past ones are no where near VF, SF, Guilty Gear, Blazblue, etc in depth. What angers me is the just blatant misassumptions made of the gameplay in the demo by him. He asked for MK players to comment and give him a better view on it and I did, its not my fault that he was wrong about everything.
I doubt you can say wheter or not this game is deeper than Tekken since there isn't any info about it.
Combo breakers have not been successful in a fighter since the glory days of killer Instinct. Which im sure was way before your time Menthos57. There is a difference between fact and opinion. And you are not stating facts. Anyways we'll see what happends at Evo. Good god.
Yeah, not hardly before my time considering I was 11 when MK came out. And how am I not stating facts, breakers are in the game to balance it and to prevent someone from getting caught in large combos if they have the skill to perform them. That is pretty much fact. Being that as you all have stated not high level MK players, your hardly in a position to argue that point, especially when Boon himself has stated that is what the breakers are for. You guys kill me with all of your stupidity, you ask for an MK player to comment on why things are done the way they are and then you all cry like baby bitches when one actually does. Jesus Christ, its like dealing with my daughter.
Methos, I think it's cool you're trying to give a few pointers and right some wrongs in what Aris has found out. It's what he asked for since he mentioned he's a MK noob numerous times. How come you're calling him a clown when all he tries to do is give this new MK a chance, giving it attention and trying to get a grasp of the gamesystem?
Supplying some right info is great, talking someone down who's saying all through the vid he's new to this game isn't. Guess it's all about attitude.
Methos are you really honestly that thick that you don't understand you're trolling when coming with an extremly aggressive attitude like you have towards A POSITIVE REVIEW? Calling the reviewer a clown, saying people sound like 10yearolds playing halo, a bigot, and everyone on the site baby bitches while stating false facts about MK being more succesful of a game then Tekken - you really don't consider that trolling? You're welcome to show a link to a more thorough review (there probably is none) or make your own youtube video (you won't). He states a hundred times he refers to what he knows which isn't MK in comparision and you STILL get upset at comparisions with it? You can't grasp the concept that the reviewers point of view or impressions are towards the tekken community and/or players that might try the game and not towards people like yourself?
You're a fanboy, you're rude, and you're the reason - yes - people despise your community. I would address your thoughts and views but I choose not to as I already despise you as a person regardless of what any said discussion would be about.
@Reality: Finish Him!
He's done.....stick a fork in him.
At first I came in an only listed facts, it wasn't until fanboys came on an started calling out MK that I got aggressive, which is IMO normal behavior. As too calling him a clown, no different than him calling those who differ with him a Homo on his vid. You state the MK community is horrid, really how do you think you guys are coming across right now, you guys are coming across as pretty up your own asses yourselves. I guess I could be more like you guys and state everything I think shitty about Tekken, like its generic Characters that hold no personalities at all and seem like cardboard cutouts.
FAN BOYS....FAN BOYS EVERYWHERE!!
@Methos75: I don't understand why you're putting so much energy into the, "MK is trying to change up 2D fighters" comment. It was one part of his 15 minute review. Even if he's wrong, what does it even matter? Seems like a pretty insignificant detail to argue over.
Maybe it's because his entire argument is based on it now.
"And how am I not stating facts, breakers are in the game to balance it and to prevent someone from getting caught in large combos if they have the skill to perform them." This line struck kind of silly in me because as I said in the previous video's comment section, I love footsies and spacing. Now the point of spacing is that you don't get caught in those launchers that lead to those large comboes. Next to this comes good defense when you're cornered, above all pay attention and be alert to your opponent's attempts to get that damage on you. I feel that MK is replacing all that careful spacing with what is basically a get out of jail free card. If a player was careless and got hit by a launcher into a high damage combo, it's his fault and I don't belive the game should hold his hand or correct his mistake that easily. It's not like the breakers are hard to perform, I'm absolutely sure they won't require more than two or three buttons, probably not even any strict conditions, you just got to be in a combo. That being said, I _don't know_ how the breaker system worked in previous MK's and KI, so that's just my guess.
And all of this is just my oppinion, to state the obvious, before you cling into it too much and start ripping me a new one, again.
Well Loldong my feeling is that footsies and spacing isn't as important In MK as in SF, which is built more along the lines of gamers using them too fight and also SF has parries and other offensive moves which MK lacks. I never stated that MK was as indepth as SF, and MK has to try to compensate some for this lack of depth by using breakers. Your right in that they are a get out of jail card, but until MK sees a radical change in its set-up its the best we can hope for.
I love it how MK fans can't except the truth. plz let's end this pointless debate.
I like how both sides are gay as hell.......
MK2011 aint out yet so reserve your judgment about saying it's "crap" until you get the full version. Talking to you Reality and Infamousminded assholes
And Methos you STFU. I can understand you're defending the game but you're going about it the wrong way. Let Tim, Check and the rest do the talking.
For fuck sakes Methos.....
You did in no way come onto this board and "only listed facts." one of your original statements was that Mk was more popular than tekken and pulled some numbers completely out of your ass or the ass of a disreputable site. Hardly facts.
Tekken is more popular In this day and age, pure and simple. It's not the early 90's anymore. Tekken 6 has sold way more copies than Mk vs DC did, and rightly so because that game was dreadful.
Mortal Kombat also hasn't been around as long as streetfighter, btw it came out shortly after Streetfighter 2
Also if you knew anything about Tekken, you would know many of the characters actually have very complex and unique backgrounds so they are hardly cookie cutter, as has the game story in general. It's only slightly less insane than the Mk story. (both games story lines have got completely shit after the first three games tho.)
Mk has a few generic ninja's, a few generic kung fu guys, and a rip off from big trouble in little china if you want to start generalizations.
leave fanboism at the door please....
Anyway, I am 32 years old. I grew up through the time these types of games where in their infancy. I love all fighting games in fact Mortal Kombat was my favorite franchise up until part 4 when it turned to absolute bollocks.
I understand the gameplay, and have been playing this demo the last couple of days. As with aris, I think the game is very promising. it plays a lot better than it seems from looking at the video's. I do think the damage is way to high and I definitely don't want to see it emulate the Mk2-3 era completely. But it keeps a close feel too what I liked about those early games.
I hope things change in the final product because I really want this to be a balanced and competitive fighting game. I mean it's a fighting game what's the point in making one otherwise?
Otherwise Aris is trying to be positive about this game and giving his opinion as a person that knows nothing about it. His challenge to the mk community to stop being a bunch of homo's is valid because for the most part all they seem to be bringing to the table is baseless statements and nonsense. HE truely wants to learn about this game and this is actually a very positive
You have made some good points about the game play, so respect for that but just calm down a bit, and if your worried about bigotry non-Pc or offensive statements you have come to the wrong site.....
Fatality....
