Avoiding the Puddle Episode 18 featuring LingMassacre
BY Aris ON Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 3:53PM
In this episode I catch up with LingMassacre. I highly recommend listening to the discussion towards the end of the interview with him because we get into some interesting philosophical topics. But before that, MYK and I discuss how the new trend of comeback mechanics in fighting games may be resulting in an angrier fighting game player. Is trash talk combined with X-Factor a recipe for disaster?

E-sports are retarded, fuck that shit.
There are no noob crews in STL.
loldongs: why are you on this site then? ^^ playing for fun? ppl play just for fun dont go to dedicated sites about games =)
So you are probably just trolling and good luck with that
Awesome podcast.
As for comeback mechanics, I'm not a fan of them because they reward a player for losing. If you get your ass beat in real life, your reward is a trip to the hospital. But these mechanics are added to make the game look flashy and so that a player feels like they always have a chance to win and make a comeback when otherwise they shouldn't.
But on the other hand, look at the amount of people who play SSF4 and MVC3 compared to 3rd Strike and MVC2. If Capcom didn't lower the barrier of entry, make them friendly for scrubs, and give the player the feeling that they are never out of a match, then there wouldn't be this resurgence in popularity of fighting games in America.
The consequence is that the comeback is now artificial because anyone can do it, and there's going to be moments where the salt levels are going to go through the roof because a player will feel like they lost to some bullshit. Trash talk + X-factor + minorities is going to lead to drama. I like drama.
As for Tekken 6, I think that it doesn't need rage because of how balanced it is. You don't need an artificial comeback mechanic in a game with great balance. But then again, look at Harada's latest interview and his comments on 3rd Strike in the arcade. Look at how long BR has been popular in the arcade. Rage can't be all bad, especially when compared to ultra combos and random ass x-factor.
Very entertaining podcast. It kept me awake after a long day of work and me nearly knocking out at my keyboard at 1 in the morning. What struck me is just how articulate LM is and how it just seemed that nearly everything he said was sincere and given a lot of thought prior to being said. You don't find that often in our community, unfortunately. Props to him too about the gaming as an art stance.
LM seems like the most sophisticated Tekken player on the podcast so far. That was pretty entertaining.
Favorite part was definitely your thoughts on the philosophy for playing Tekken, entering Tournaments, and enjoying it. Mad Props to you man! Greetings from Canada! (bitch) ;)
@Wing: Pick the character you have the most fun with.
If any of y'all are interested in hearing more on the topic art vs perfection, I've written about here:

Chapter 97.
SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION FTW!
a lesson in STL mathematics:
STL Scrub Crew > STL OGs
STL OGs + STL thread = furious elitist circle jerk
i found it interesting how the topic of the trend for game designers is to make it so the people who don't have a chance now will feel like they do have a chance against gamers who are typically much better than them with the rage, ultra, xfactor, etc. systems.
the interesting part is how aris stated, speaking for his self during the lingmassacre interview, [what i enjoy most is beating people who are better than me]. does that then mean aris, or anyone that enjoys beating people who are normally better than them (aka scrub, newbie, etc.), should like rage, ultra, and xfactor?
good interview. the hosts are sexy as fuck. nice subjects and discussion. fuck ymr. jk. i miss him after all the bullshit. fucking fry cook in china. damn. maybe he's on to something.
this is for aris this is the video of the marvel fight that you were referring to. You can post it on the front page if you like.

We are not noobs or scrubs in STL whoever keeps using an alias to defend us. Unless you live here mind your own business. That goes for you too lingmassacre, stfu.
great interview aris loved it
Yeah, perhaps I did overstep my bounds. Oh well. When asked to talk shit, I talk shit.
STL New School, shut the fuck up you're a new school. You're opinion is invalid.
STL OG, only I can tell New School to shut the fuck up. :) You could at least TRY to to hide the fact your a pussy lingmassacre using fake STL names after all of your posts to talk shit. You call me a bitch in the podcast then hide behind fake names to talk shit. Seems like the only bitch here is you.
How about you guys settle this @ EVO
They can't, STL OG's don't play Tekken anymore, they're too old.
Jesus Christ. I rest my case.
Never used a fake name in my life. If I have an opinion, I'm more than comfortable sharing it over a cup of tea.
You fired a quip. I fired a quip back. You retorted saying you've won more. Grats. It's true, I don't deny it. Good burn. Frankly I had considered the matter closed. The STL fake names want to come in here, give you misconceptions about me, I can understand your response. It's not like we've been formally introduced or anything.
I'm really not a fan of this style of shit talking. I know I'm the one who started it. I've stated mea culpa, that I delved in to another crew's business.
So if I run across you in the future Slips, I'm more than happy to have an in depth conversation over a cup of coffee. I'm buying. Least I can do for being pugnacious on a podcast.
Avoiding the Guddle can't fuck with Avoiding the puddle! Great podcast as usual.
