Tekken 7 Thoughts Plus Additional Info From Harada
BY Aris ON Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 6:53PM
Here's a quick video covering my thoughts on the Tekken 7 reveal trailer as well as some additional info I was able to get from Katsuhiro Harada this past weekend at Evo.

Interesting stuff. Thank you for the info. You asked some great questions.
Some thoughts:
While I can agree that the roster size has gotten a little out of hand, talking roster cuts gets scary when you play Anna like me. I get flashbacks to the Tekken 4 days. But, at the same time, it would be kind of cool if they scrap a bunch of old characters and focus on adding more new characters. Plus, I will always find someone else to play as for my main.
Aris made a great point a few weeks ago on an ATP live. TTT 2 felt a little stale because 97 percent of the chracters didn't get an updated look for that game. A new main costume. I wish you would have thought to ask if we can expect updated looks in the upcoming game. But, i guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks, anyway. I wish they would scrap the full on customization and give the players predetermined alternates. Customizations look like shit. And I fear that because they assume that most people will customize their characters, that is why the don't bother to update the characters' main outfits. What's the point if half the players are going to just make their characters look as close to the Crow as possible or some other stupid goth crap while the other half are just going to make them look as dumb as possible, anyway?
I really don't see the need for an arcade release nowadays, though. You can update the game online now. They should embrace it. They don't need to patch the game every week like the MK and Injustice guys. I also don't want them to be afraid to do DLC. I love what Tecmo is doing with DOA 5 right now. Follow that model. Just don't be stupid and have on disc DLC like capcom did with SF X T. So, anyway, I find that logic of having an arcade release for "balancing purposes" to be outdated and maybe even dishonest. It might be a white lie they tell because they believe in the long run they can make more money by doing an arcade release first. Once again, if they want to do an arcade release, I hope they follow the DOA model and simply make future DLC characters exclusive to arcades for a short amount of time.
Anyway, I apologize to anyone who actually took the time to read this. I'm just excited to see the new game in a couple of weeks at sdcc.
Holy moly canoli! Harada said he thinks a roster of 36 - 38 is enough?! THAT'S WHAT I ALWAYS SAID! (Well, I said between 35 - 40, but that's almost the same.) This is very good news!
The main thing killing Tekken is the huge number of characters and their 250+ moves. Everybody knows and agrees that it is too overwhelming. Get rid of characters that are mainly based on confusing the opponent, like Yoshimitsu, Lei, Hwoarang, Zafina and other shitty characters where you don't know what the fuck is even going on.
Also, reduce the combolength, or at least get a meter for a combobreaker.
Man, maybe I'll buy T7 after all. When it comes out in 2017 or something... after 2 years in asian archades to get the balances and stuff... *sigh*
#BUFFLARS
I only want one character in this game: Devil-Lili
Here's how it went down! Kazuya fucked Lili and his sperm made her devil-ish. It all makes sense! Think about it, a Lili with electric. That game would be a day-1 purchase for me!
One is super hyped!!!! Hope my man crush Skillpachi is in the game! Big up Tootingshire, on a side note where the SC2 HD evo stream!

No. I hate that this gets passed around like it's some universal truth. T6 was basically dead before TT2 came out, games like SF have an equal amount of characters and there are other games that are much harder to play and learn than TT2. If 13 yearolds as Gen kids and AK can learn it and compete at the highest level then so can you.
@ Reality
Close, but no cigar, man! It IS the universal truth, acknowledged by even Harada and players like JDCR. They've stated it many times. Aris have also said it several times because that's his experience with what other people are saying. So has Rip. I could go on and on about it. Your example of 2 players making it doesn't change that fact.
Saying that SF has the same amount of characters is basically useless in this discussion. Those characters have 15-20 moves each. You can learn a new character in a day in SF. You'd know every move of a character, all the framedata, combos and even matchups in a weekend in SF. In Tekken you'll need a frikin' month for the same information.
T6 wasn't dead when TTT2 came out. TekkenZaibatsu was actually visited alot back then both by new and old palyers. But now with TTT2 even TekkenZaibatsu is almost closed and noone is there. TTT2 really killed Tekken by being this rediculous over-the-top crazy game with a million factors to consider. You know it's too overwhelming. Why else aren't anybody playing it? in my country all the Tekkensites are dead. Noone plays TTT2. But they all played T6 until TTT2 came out.
T6 actually hit the sweet spot when it comes to charactersize and number of moves. I hope T7 cuts on even that.
And also, I agree with those other guys. We need to #BUFFLARS and we need Devil-Lili.
(If the movelist was structured to show which moves were to be used in its proper context, it would simplify the game. If the training mode was indepth, showing frames/hitbox, i.e if it resembled VF, than the roster wouldn't be an issue. But Harada wants to hide the depth of tekken, because if new players turn on the game and see how deep it is, they will turn off the game. By letting people think that tekken is a masher game it sells more. TTT2 tag assault system was way too long & complicated for new players. IGN gave tekken a substandard 7 score siting complexity in game design aswell as menu setup. I initially disagreed, but in hindsight they were right.
I think harada is right. The general public aren't interested in a deep experience. COD has shown the casual nature of the average gamer. The failure of VF also might indicate this, disregarding its cosmetic failings, aswell as a lack of story mode.
To commercially succeed this game would need a roster reduction. The way tekken is setup, its a legacy game. This means that you must have played tekken 6 to understand TTT2. For new players that is asking alot.)
In my opinion, they should make Tekken Revolution a separate franchise, for new players to learn tekken. Release a Tekken Revolution 2 which will be an easy mode version of Tekken 7, and leave the original tekken series complex for the hardcore players
Tekken 7 "should" be solo? I like Tag better!
^^ So why don't you just continue playing TTT2, you stupid canadian cunt??!
Pretty much every fighting games, esp. the smaller ones, uses the arcade scene as a testbed.
Even Capcom don't make exceptions with SF.
They'll make a group of characters for beginners to easy to use -
expect your characters, name them yourself, be seriously nerfed and extremely unsafe.
@Nickname Yoshimitsu have the most unique fighting style in Fighting game History, never would I want to see him go. Also, he have been in every Tekken there is, except Tekken Revolution, which I understand, as that game isn't suited for serious/hard to learn characters.
What does Aris mean by "backwalk" being added to Tekken Revolution? You've always been able to backwalk in Tekken and the backdashing isn't any different than ih TTT2.
They have a new backwalk animation. *They walk back a little faster i Tekken Revolution.
I hope no one actually listens to the lunacy ITT. If you simplify the move lists and shrink the roster you'll end up with Battle Arena Toshinden. Play SF or grow a pair and learn how to play the game correctly.
