Tekken Mura Interview with JDCR

Shana's next interview in his series of interviews for the Tekken Mura website features Korea's renowned top player JDCR. In this interview, JDCR goes over how he got into Tekken, his character choices as well as his experiences traveling to other countries to play Tekken. The interview is a bit shorter then Tekken Mura's other interviews but it's still a worthwhile read if you're a fan of JDCR. Translation of the interview is done by me and there's no other player interview mentioned in this piece so this might be Shana's last interview. Enjoy!

―― Thanks for taking the time for today. Can you start by telling us all how you got into playing Tekken.

JDCR: I first started playing fighting games when I was a 1st grader in elementary school. At the time I was a first grader in elementary school until I was a 1st grader in middle school, I would play the King of Fighters series of fighting games.  In Middle school though, me & my brother wondered if there were any other games we could go play so we went ahead and searched for some. We found Tekken Tag Tournament 1 which had recently came out and was pretty popular back at the time. I went and started playing Tekken with TTT1 back when I discovered it in the 2nd year of middle school.

―― Is Heihachi Mishima your main character? Armor King?

JDCR: Speaking for myself, If I am mentally and psychically prepared then Heihachi Mishima is my main character. Armor King is not my main character. I started playing Armor King during Tekken Crash back in Tekken 6 because at the time, Korea didn't have a lot of good Armor King players. That lack of good Armor King players around made me want to pick him up. If I was being honest, I do not find Armor King suitable to play Tekken with. I've been using Heihachi ever since I liked playing with him back in middle school with  TTT1.

―― That sounds rough. From what I've seen, I get the impression that your sub characters are other Mishima characters. Do you use either Kazuya or Devil Jin?

JDCR: I used Kazuya at the time of Tekken 5. I played Kazuya for various reasons such as really liking his mid right heel move (notation is f+4, move would give frame advantage if blocked) as well as how he looked refined and cool in that game. I did play a bit of Devil Jin but I found him too cheap and good in that game. However I don't think I am as good with those characters. When I look at both of those characters, I think Kazuya is better to use then Devil Jin. Because of Kazuya's f+4 as well as his general ground game, I think that Kazuya is suitable to play Tekken with and is easy to use.

―― Despite there being a lot of people out there that play Tekken with the Korean playstyle, I always think of you as the best example for strong Tekken defense. Can you tell me how you came to build up a strong Tekken defense?

JDCR: At the time of Tekken 5, to be seen as one of the 'top players' over here, you had to have exceptionally good movement. I think I was as good as Help Me and Knee on that part, I at the time didn't concentrate on having good movement and just try to succeed and win matches in the game. Nowadays however, I've played players in other regions and I've found that they have poor movement. I hear about how they recognize me as being a really good player for having exceptional defense. It seems those players have focused on developing a strong offense. During the time of Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection, the better player was the player who had good fundamentals and have good defense. With Tekken Tag Tournament 2, you have to now have good fundamentals, solid defense and good combos. As always I've been working on and improving my ground game.

―― A while ago I had the image that you could win matches using only just basic d/f+1s and lows (laughs)

JDCR: I've certainly played before using only just those.

―― JDCR it seems like you have a good image (respected) amongst Japanese players.

JDCR: Yeah I do. It reminds me of when I was part of both an exhibition and Kumite event in Japan. Around the time of those events, I've only played 300 matches with my Heihachi and Armor King team according to my banapass. I didn't have that many matches played because I was at the time playing and learning the Jinpachi and Ogre team. When I had to later play against Nobi in a Ft10 match in Osaka with my main Heihachi / Armor King team, I got the feeling of having to work way too hard in TTT2 when I was earlier playing Jinpachi / Ogre. I eventually won that match but I thought that this game was really interesting after that experience. It was really interesting deathmatching players during that time too, it was fresh to be able to sit down with players from Tokyo like Yuu on one end of the cab with me on the other side with Korean parts installed on my end. A Ft10 with both players perfectly comfortable to play the game is the best format to assess who is the better player.

―― I've heard about all your trips to Finland and other foreign countries before. Do you go over to all those places just for Tekken?

JDCR: I would frequently get invitations to participate and play Tekken in foreign countries. This year I had the chance to go to Finland when I went over to Europe for about a month. Since I would win the tournaments over there, I would sometimes earn more invitations to go to other places. Of course I'd have to keep playing and focused on Tekken when I go overseas, I'd say the main thing I'd do while I'm in a different country is sightseeing (laughs.) I've been studying how to communicate with the English language so it's always fun to be able to meet new people and play Tekken in all these places.

―― Do you have any goals or things your aiming for to achieve in Tekken at the moment? Any plans to go to Japan or something?

JDCR: Right now I've got several offers to go play Tekken, I recently got invited to go play Tekken in China in May this year. Excluding that trip though, I haven't confirmed any plans to go anywhere else at the moment. I've heard that MASTERCUP is planning on running a MASTERCUP tournament in November this year and I'm not busy during that time so I'm thinking of going.

―― Oh please do come! Any last words for all the Tekken players out there?

JDCR: While it may be fun to play single-player games, it is much more enjoyable to be able to play with other people and talk about the game with them. Let's all play Tekken together and make it popular.

―― Thank you for today.
