TTT2: Play Tests Indicate Duplicate Character Teams Not Fun

In a translated interview by SGCafe, Katsuhiro Harada stated that after multiple complaints of having to learn two characters in TTT2, they tried allowing two of the same character on one team and it was unanimous that players thought it was not fun.

“We tried this out, and it turned out to be extremely discomforting! (Laughs) For instance, if Lili were to launch her opponent and tag out, in comes Lili again… what the?! (Laughs) Also, suppose all four characters on both teams were Lili, we don’t even know what’s going to happen anymore,” Harada told 4Gamer.

“To be sure, we had a bunch of test players come in to give this [duplicate characters on a team] a go. The feedback received was unanimous: ‘this is just not very fun…’ So we had them try 1-vs-1 instead. As this format was pretty similar to past Tekken games, naturally it played well.”

I find this topic to be very peculiar. Why didn't TTT1 have the same complaint from players? I remember the tag system being recieved very well when that game was released. Have players gotten lazy? Or perhaps the depth of each character has become so much more complex that players feel overwhelmed.

like i said, the damage is relative with my point being juggles could do less damage if there wasn't an easy juggle filler mechanic allowing you to carry them longer.

i have played t6br a couple times, you guys have probably seen me play on the ewgf stream against aris and in some of the last minute tournaments a few months back but it is not a game i choose to play. i played everything from t3 to t5dr and i enjoyed my time with all of them, regardless of how bad some of the gameplay choices were (like backdash in t4 among other things.)

you can presume i suck, you can tell me i might not be a very smart player, thats all fine. in my time i played some of the best competition, against some players you all currently look up to and i have beaten many of them and lost to many of them. im not your run of the mill fgc moron bitching about this gameplay mechanic that you can tell to "learn how to block better and you wont get launched"

just because bound adds a couple more inputs does not make it harder, or at least not hard enough to miss bnb juggles.

the bound mechanic is not needed and the game could probably be better without it

As someone who is actively playing TTT2U.

Solo mode is lame. I can beat worse players than me by outplaying but there's a higher chance of losing rounds from getting outrandom'd. Many people in where I play use it because it's 'easier' on them. If they used the tag system they'd get destroyed more consistently due to bad use of the system etc.

Tag feature is really deep. It actually expands the moves you'll use in relation to T6.

Comparing Tekken Tag 2 to Tekken Tag 1 is like comparing a basic calculator to a graphing calculator. Yeah, the basics work the same, but theres HELLA more stuff you can do/have to figure out how to do, to use it to its potential.

Take any character from Tekken Tag 1 and compare it to the same character in Tekken Tag 2 and their usable move list probably doubles? Throw in bound moves, homing moves, wall carries, wall combos, Tag Assault wall combos (as starter or filler) and its significantly more difficult to pick up a second character in this game than it was in Tag 1.

Tried playing TTT1 on Hybrid...

I love spamming King's SS 3+4...
But then I tried Shining Wizard, and nothing came out...

I can't see myself playing TTT1 alot anymore... Too simple to be fun...

I am not sure, Bind at least gives almost everyone certain amount of wall carry. Also, it balances it out somewhat in infinite stages where certain characters do better in.

Does it "dumb down the game"? this is an opinion. It is the as saying X-Factor is bad cos of Dark Wesker n Dark Pheonix

I already have 2 main characters I play with in T6, so that's not the problem. It's just that tag games feel weird to me, I don't have as much fun with them.
It is possible that many people demanded this feature out of lazyness, but I don't see the problem with that. As long as it's balanced that is.

Ppl today just want to sit down, go online, press a button, and instant win.
Laziness over the top.

Back when I bought ttt prologue (ttt2 demo) from a local game store, the people who worked there complained how hard it was to play Tekken and that they had to "actually learn combos".

To the avg gamer, Tekken is hard to play and people are lazy as hell. But if you are serious about this game then it will be very rewarding. Just learn another character, it's not that hard. Use two characters - this is ttt2 bitches!

My problem with bound is not the damage, its the lenght and how easy it is to do. I couldnt really explain it well and give a good example until i played SCV. Mitsu Launches, does two attacks that take a few seconds, his combo is over. Viola launches you does a 15 hit combo where you get lifted off the ground, even if it does the same damage it still annoying as fuck. Its pretty much exactly why i hate bound.

Ok...the comments piss me off....if you are a Tekken fan since TTT1 and you bitch about learning another character, then go fuck yourself. As for the game it has to appeal to the casual audience, otherwise it won't make any money unless the hardcore fans are willing to spend 3 or 4 times as much on the game, and at this point no retailer in their right mind will have a 150-200 dollar game on their shelf (i would actually spend 200 on Tekken) And appealing to the casual audience is Namco's biggest concern i think, while Harada tries his best to cater to the fan base. I can even imagine disagreements inside the company on this subject so give them a fucking break, all you negative and narrow minded cocksuckers!!! And if you like TTT1 go play that...Ford has not stuck with the same Mustang for over 60 years, vintage clubs will always have fewer members, this principle is applicable to video games as well. I live in a country located near satan's asshole, so i have 3 people to play Tekken with, that makes me a casual player, and i love T6 BR. I know that there is a nostalgic aura surrounding TTT1 but when TTT2 comes out on console, i will be in the majority who will buy this game and make Namco the money to help support the competitive community witch i also love (fuck soccer EWGF FTW!) Shouldn't my concerns also be addressed in regards to the game??? Like for instance leave the bound system alone...

It was just noobs trolling Harada on Facebook and Twitter. Harada is easy to troll, apparently. He listened to them! Harada was like, "These Tekken players are right! Learning a second character is too hard! Lets let them have two of the same character." Pfft.

man. why the fuck does the round end when 1 character dies is my first gripe. why aren't there snapbacks is my second. tag assault is like a variation on assists, but weirder. tag crash? tag switches to get you out of shitty situations only when you're life bar is glowing white, who the fuck came up with that one, fucking retarded.

get your fucking shit straight namco. why the fuck is there even an arcade release these days? who the fuck forgot to include record mode in training? you mean now not only can i not enjoy online mode, i can't enjoy offline mode. thanks assholes.

Your complaining about recovery? REALLY? Tekken is one of the fairest games when it comes to recovery, you can't just hover over people them and go right into a combo with a predictable cross up like in Street fighter there are about 8 or more ways to get up. And there is an art to getting up as well, something else you have to learn which requires skill. You noobs are amazing to me.

actually, you fucking scrub, i'd say sfxt has some of the best recovery. if i have to explain why that is to you, it would make sense to end that point here.

Friday, April 13, 2012 at 4:01 PM | Unregistered Commenter2BitJack

Actually it wouldn't make sense...you compare SfxT to Tekken??? 0_o

reread: "if i have to explain why that is to you"

A couple of things here. Yes, the game-play systems have more complexity these days and the character are harder to learn, the bound and wall system's also means you have to learn extra things to get to a reasonable level of proficiency with each character.

But Namco simply just need to realize that Tekken is not a game for the casual or amateurs and they should stop trying to make it one. If you need this create a new franchise that caters to them, don't ruin tekken for the rest of us please...

@the devil Kazuya

and risk turning the scene into the Virtual Fighter scene? Or walk the path that Street Fighter took before SF4?

Accessibility or a manageable entry level learning path is needed for games like Tekken to continue to grow. If new players to the genre (FG in general) or 3D FGs cannot learn the game easily enough then the scene will wither and die. Or it becomes something that only the people inside know about but people outside just can't get it.

VF is such a deep fighter but it's mechanics are not that accessible to newbies. Veterans are still playing it but try getting someone new to like the game just watching other ppl play.

This thing is a tightrope and it will not be easy to balance it out. As it stands now, Tekken is a hard enough game to learn. It is almost impossible for someone to learn anything without guidance. LUYG videos help but you still need that mentoring before you get the deep nuances of the game. I feel that when people start complaining that the game developer developed this for the "scrubs", they need to think back to when they were learning the game and whether they did those "scrubby" things
