Mortal Kombat: Run or Dash?

Now that the Mortal Kombat TE stick has been unveiled, and we have seen that they are using the old MK layout, It got me thinking if I would prefer a run or a dash in the next Mortal Kombat game. As of right now, run does not exist in the new game, and it seems they are trying to emulate the success of their 1990s counterpart, Street Fighter. Nether Realm Studios has said many times that they are trying to bring Mortal Kombat back to its glory days. However, when you go back and watch high level Ultimate Mortal Kombat videos, you will quickly realize that run is a huge part of the game play. I mean it has its own button! Apparently, the run button on the new TE stick will act as a tag button for the new tag mode in MK9.

I personally am torn on this one. On the one hand, I'd like MK to stay true to its own ideas and think of new ways to make them work in today's competitive fighting game scene. On the other hand, who the fuck came up with a run button in the first place?

What do you guys think?

On a side note, the run sound effect is too fucking good.

MK9 is going to be so hype ! I don't think run came into play until MK3 / Ultimate MK3 and everyone has wanted MK to go back to MK2, there was no run. Running was a huge part of Ultimate and was a great way to lead into combos...I don't know I guess we'll have to see when MK9 drops.

HAHA! I love watching old fighting games like this. UMK3 was awesome, I prefer running to dashing. I never liked being committed to a dash when I could run and cancel it when i needed to.

run would be nice. it would speed the game up a lot more and make for fun game play

imo the run button was a weird idea in the first place. idk I don't play umk3 competitively, so it's only casual play opinion, but I always thought having a button to run was weird and awkward. If they were gonna do run I would have rather had it be a joystick input like the usual dash motion

Keep the dash but make the characters do the OG run sound: "OOOoouuuuuuuuuagh!"

@Keton hah I like that idea. I hope atleast a couple characters still have some type of run command.

I think the run button is on the stick for the HD Kollection or just for MK3/UMK3/MK4 gaming i believe.

Maybe a "groove" select mode like Capcom VS SNK 2 where one of them is run and the other is dash. Don't know what else could be different in the grooves though. Maybe xray moves or something.

The extra button is not for Dash or Run its the "TAG" button for tag team

Based on the video MK9 you embedded... I think the dash in MK 9 is pretty fast.....
and makes the pace of the game fast enough....

It's in between MK2 & UMK3..

The link probably doesn't clearly show how MK II is really played in tournaments...but at least you get to see the pace.

Fuck dashing. I want my run button. Why not bring back something that was unique to MK instead of just doing what other games are doing to try and make money?

I'm sure MK9 will be fine for most people, but I just lost my hype for it. And now I just found out that it also uses a combo breaker. I hope that won't be the case when the game hits retail because that would suck and defeat the purpose of using a new combo system by having a way to break out of it.

@ Malice

Did you watch the recent MKcast? They explain in detail how the system works and from the look of it, its not going to be used that much. Based on what they say, a simple breaker won't be as beneficial as a clutch x-ray when you're almost dead....

I'm sorry, I've been playing MK since the beginning. The Run button was the single best thing that MK did to improve the near perfect MK2... Don't get me wrong, MKII was off the hook amazing but when MK3 came out w/ the run.... Now that made MK Soooooo intense! Seriously! I was so nasty w/ the run into a combo where if you are a punk just trying to upper cut or jump kick, I could run out of your kicks way or run in to punch your flippin face off! BRING BACK THE RUN!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE! Yes I lost all the hype for MK 9 and don't even want it anymore! It's still a slight modern fighting style with that stupid dash.... I flippin dash! A-Holes took out the run and you idiots are supporting it! DOn't flippin settle you fairies! I would wipe your asses up with combo after combo if there was a run button.. ED SUX! Why did you take out the fuckin button?
